The wonderful metamorphosis of Buiksloterham

Architect Tom Frantzen was one of the lucky ones to win the municipal tender in 2010 for the construction of a sustainable apartment block in Buiksloterham. He opted to build his Patch 22 residential and office building largely out of wood. “It is the only raw material that is 100% renewable and in which CO2 is stored in a sustainable way.” A wood pellet boiler provides heat, while solar cells on the roof produce so much electricity that the building is energy neutral. In order to be able to easily give parts of the complex a different function in the future, the ventilation is adjusted to the standards for offices and the floors are extra sturdy.
